Location Information
Location Description:
Peru is located in Western South America, bordering the South Pacific Ocean, between Chile and Ecuador. The total area of Peru is 1,285,220 sq km, which is slightly smaller than Alaska.

Iquitos, Peru is known as the Gateway to the Amazon. Accessible only by boat or plane, Iquitos is situated at the convergence of two rivers, which come together and form the Amazon. The Peruvians here are the descendants of the Incas. This large city of 400,000 people is driven by the combination of the lumber industry and tourism. Many jungle excursions begin and end in Iquitos. Many of the people of this region consider themselves separate from the rest of Peru, as they are isolated from the capital Lima by miles of jungle and the Andes Mountains.

People, Culture and Religion
Peru has a divided society in which the wealthy and mainly European elites have long dominated its more numerous population of indigenous people and mestizos (those of mixed European and indgenous ancestry). The indigenous people are descendants of the Inca, who ruled an extensive South American empire centered in the Peruvian highlands before they were conquered by Spaniards in the 16th century. Attracted by the gold and silver mines of the Andes, the Spaniards quickly converted Peru into the seat of their wealth and power in South America. The sharp class and ethnic divisions that developed during the colonial period persist to this day. The people of Peru speak Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara.

The Native American heritage of Peru is one of the richest in South America. Although Spain gave Peru its language, religion, and rulers, the civilization of the Inca has left its traces throughout Peruvian culture. Archaeological excavations have uncovered monumental remains of Native American societies. Architecture of the Spanish colonial period, a fusion of Spanish and Native American forms, is called Creole. In art today, the indigenist school pointedly interprets 20th-century Peru in a Native American mode.

The primary religion in Peru is Roman Catholic (90%).
Government and Economy
Peru is a republic governed by a constitution promulgated in 1993. This constitution replaced the 1980 constitution, which was suspended in 1992. The new constitution increased the power of the executive and allowed for the reelection of the president to a second term. It also unified the formerly bicameral legislature.

The Peruvian economy has become increasingly market-oriented, with major privatizations completed since 1990 in the mining, electricity, and telecommunications industries. Thanks to strong foreign investment and the cooperation between the government and the World Bank, growth was strong in 1994-97 and inflation was brought under control. In 1998, El Nino's impact on agriculture, the financial crisis in Asia, and instability in Brazilian markets undercut growth.

The Peruvian Sol is worth approximately 30 cents, depending on the exchange rate and the merchants.
